The development of an online sleep intervention aimed at parents of children with epilepsy.
A Talk by Dr Georgia Cook PhD (Research Fellow, Oxford Brookes University)
About this Talk
Sleep problems are common in children with epilepsy and can have a range of negative impacts on the child and wider family. Behavioural sleep interventions are effective for dealing with similar sleep issues in typically developing children, but it is unknown if they may require adjustments to be acceptable and effective for use with parents of children with epilepsy. In this talk I will provide an overview of the process we undertook in a large National Institute of Health and Care Research funded project ‘Changing Agendas on Sleep, Treatment and learning in Epilepsy’ to adapt behavioural sleep interventions for parents of children with epilepsy. I will talk through what the parents and children that we spoke to felt were important considerations and the aspects of the intervention(s) that required tailoring. In addition, I will highlight practically how tailored the information in our intervention development. I will detail the content of final intervention and consider the potential benefits of an online behavioural sleep interventions for this group. Finally, it is helpful to consider if this is a modifiable and/or scalable approach for addressing sleep problems in other neurodevelopmental disorders.
