About this speaker
Founder & Owner of Susan Hastings Pediatric Physical Therapy, Dr. Susan Hastings is a Board-Certified Pediatric Certified Specialist, who graduated from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with a DPT specializing in Pediatrics in 2010. She has used Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for over 25 years in children with cerebral palsy (CP), and teaches courses which emphasize motor-learning in this population.
In 2017, she found a new application of FES using Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Neuromodulation (tTSCN or TSN) for children with neurological impairments, including CP and spina bifida. This led to a collaboration with Drs. V R Edgerton and P Gad from the Edgerton Research Lab at UCLA, experts in the use of Spinal Cord Neuromodulation, and she worked with their company SpineX in developing the SCIP device for neuromodualtion. She designed and oversaw the neuromodulation in their initial pilot studies in children with CP leading to the designing of the Phase II Trial Study Protocols for FDA approval. Susan left SpineX to concentrate on the studying the numerous sensory motor changes uncovered during use of neuromodulation in pediatrics with Drs.V Reggie Edgerton PhD, Charles Liu,MD, Hui Zhong MD, and Chris Johnson, PhD in founding Brocolli Impossible to Possible Pediatric Research Lab, under the Spinal Cord Injury Lab of the same name at the Rancho Research Institute in LA.
Susan continues to teach her methods to physical and occupational therapists in continuing education courses, both nationally and internationally, and has presented at Neuroscience 2023, APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM), American Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapists (AAPPT), and state conferences. She will present a poster on Neuromodulation at American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine Meeting (AACPDM) in October 2024.
