Dr Penny Butler FCSP PhD

PENNY BUTLER FCSP, PhD.

Penny is a physiotherapist and researcher with more than 40 years of paediatric experience and a particular interest in the biomechanics of movement control. She has been awarded a Fellowship from the professional organisation for physiotherapists in the UK for services to paediatrics. Now retired from clinical work, Penny continues in teaching and research to explore and promote the benefits of the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo) and Targeted Training, a therapy strategy to help children with problems of movement control to gain upright postural skills. As part of this, she has created material for a website providing online teaching and resources for therapists interested in training postural control. Penny is also a Visiting Research Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) and part of a team concluding an MRC funded project ‘Quantification of trunk control for children with neuromotor and neuromuscular disorders’. This uses a machine learning approach to quantify SATCo and will deliver a tool suitable for use in the routine therapy clinic.
