Bernie is Professor of Children’s Nursing at Edge Hill University and President of the Association of British Paediatric Nurses (ABPN). Her research focuses on improving the lives of children, young people and their families, particularly in relation to pain. She is an RCN Fellow based on her work on children’s pain. Her research work is primarily qualitative, participatory, narrative, creative and arts based. She engages with professionals and experts from different disciplines and practices to inform her thinking and to improve practice. Examples of this include assessing pain in children with complex care needs and her work with the Somatic Practice and Chronic Pain Network. She has considerable experience in successful public and patient involvement and engagement with children and families. Her current work includes a focus on breakthrough pain in children. Other recent work has addressed how young adults with chronic pain and their partners navigate their romantic relationships. She is innovative in her strategies for dissemination using co-developed animations and resources. She has a strong track record in terms of publications and impact. Her most recent book was co-edited with Professsor Imelda Coyne and is titled Being Participatory: Researching with Children.
